Announcement: A Brand New RTHK's TV Series "Medical Discovery" On Air to Explore Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)

26 Jul 2011 (Tue)

[A picture showing a poster promoting the 8-episdoes TV series ' Medical Discovery'.] Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) is going to broadcast a brand new TV series from 26 July 2011 onwards, every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm on TVB Jade. This programme tells the stories of 8 Hongkongers regaining their health.

With urbanization and advances in medical technology, non-communicable diseases (NCD) have replaced communicable ones as the biggest threat to human health. NCDs are highlighted by 2 starkly distinct features: on one hand they may cause irreversible damage to the patient's health and the patient may need life-long treatment; on the other hand, such diseases are often caused by the patient's lifestyle choices, such as dietary habits, drinking too much, smoking, or lack of exercise - which means such diseases are actually preventable on one's own efforts.

Money can buy comfort and convenience, but not health; more ironic is that such affluent lifestyle is usually the culprit of NCDs. This 8-episode series covers the high-risk factors of NCDs, namely "3-Highs" (high blood pressure, high blood glucose and high cholesterol), boozing, overweight, smoking, diabetes, mood, degeneration, and wear and tear.

In each episode, an individual having risk factor(s) of NCD(s) will be the protagonist, with a medical team of experts from different disciplines tailor-making a "self-rescue" proposal for him/her. It is hoped that through adopting a change in lifestyle, balanced diet and adequate physical exercise, the protagonist will improve on his/her health.

One's body should be cherished by oneself - and it is never too late to start.
