Knowledge about Alcohol-related Harm among Hong Kong People

  • More than 70% of persons aged 15 or above agreed with the correct statement “Alcohol consumption can cause cancer”. The corresponding proportion was higher among females than males.

According to the Department of Health’s Population Health Survey 2020-22, 73.1% of persons aged 15 or above agreed with the correct statement “Alcohol consumption can cause cancer”. The corresponding proportion among females and males were 73.4% and72.8% respectively.

According to the Department of Health’s Population Health Survey 2020-22, the proportion who agreed with the correct statement “Alcohol consumption can cause cancer” was the highest for those aged 15-24, with 76%. The corresponding proportion among those aged 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, 85 or above were 74.3%, 75.9%, 73.4%, 73.8%, 69.9%, 67.0% and 63.1% respectively.

According to the Department of Health’s Population Health Survey 2020-22, 20.7% of persons aged 15 or above disagreed with the incorrect statement “Alcohol is harmful to health only when drinking regularly or heavily”. The corresponding proportion among females and males were 20.4% and20.9% respectively.

According to the Department of Health’s Population Health Survey 2020-22, the proportion who disagreed with the incorrect statement “Alcohol is harmful to health only when drinking regularly or heavily” was the highest for those aged 25-34, with 22.7%. The corresponding proportion among those aged 15-24, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, 85 or above were 21.3%, 20.9%, 21.4%, 20.9%, 18.2%, 17.2% and 18.9% respectively.

  • Only about 50% of the persons aged 15 or above disagreed with the incorrect statement “Drinking five cans of beer on a single occasion is not harmful as long as it is not a regular habit”. The corresponding proportion was higher among females than males.

According to the Department of Health’s Population Health Survey 2020-22, 47.2% of the persons aged 15 or above disagreed with the incorrect statement “Drinking five cans of beer on a single occasion is not harmful as long as it is not a regular habit”. The corresponding proportion among females and males were 47.7% and 46.7% respectively.

According to the Department of Health’s Population Health Survey 2020-22, the proportion who disagreed with the incorrect statement “Drinking five cans of beer on a single occasion is not harmful as long as it is not a regular habit” was the highest for those aged 25-34, with 51.0%.  The corresponding proportion among those aged 15-24, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, 85 or above were 47.4%, 48.7%, 48.1%, 48.2%, 42.8%, 41.0% and 40.4% respectively.
