“Young and Alcohol Free” Secondary School Student Interactive Health Talk 2019-2020 – December 2019 Report

Department of Health delegated The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon to conduct “Young and Alcohol Free” Secondary School Student Interactive Health Talk 2019-2020 in different secondary schools all over Hong Kong from October 2019 to July 2020. In December 2019, 7 sessions of Interactive Health Talks were successfully conducted with over 1 700 students participated.

Department of Health delegated The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon to conduct “Young and Alcohol Free” Secondary School Student Interactive Health Talk 2019-2020 in different secondary schools all over Hong Kong from October 2019 to July 2020. In November 2019, 9 sessions of Interactive Health Talks were successfully conducted with over 2 000 students participated.

“Young and Alcohol Free” Secondary School Student Interactive Health Talk 2019-2020 – October 2019 Report

Department of Health delegated The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon to conduct “Young and Alcohol Free” Secondary School Student Interactive Health Talk 2019-2020 in different secondary schools all over Hong Kong from October 2019 to July 2020. Many schools applied for the health talk and the response was good. In October 2019, 14 sessions of Interactive Health Talks were successfully conducted with over 2 300 students participated.

“ Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops – May & June Report

The Department of Health delegated The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon to conduct “Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops in different secondary schools all over Hong Kong from October 2018 to June 2019. 51 sessions of workshops have been completed in this academic year. Over 8200 students from 44 secondary schools participated actively in the programme.

In January & February 2019, 7 sessions of “Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops were successfully conducted with around 1 600 students participated.

Department of Health spoke at “Healthpedia” – Alcohol Related-harms

Representative from Department of Health attended a radio program “ Healthpedia” on RTHK Radio 1. Alcohol-related harms to teenagers were shared with the hosts of the program, Mr. Theo Shum and Ms. Akina Fong Kin-yee. Parents should not encourage children and teenagers to drink alcohol.

“ Young and Alcohol Free - Health Educational Talk”- Civil Aid Service Trainers Training

The Department of Health organized a “Train the trainer” session on “Young and Alcohol Free-Health Educational Talk” at the headquarters of the Civil Aid Service (CAS) on 15 January 2019. In total 146 CAS Cadet Corps officers and instructors attended the training session. They would disseminate the messages of alcohol-related harms and “ Say no to alcohol” to 4 000 CAS Cadet Corps members in coherence with “ Young and Alcohol - Health Educational Talk”.

“ Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops – November & December Report

The Department of Health delegated The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society, Kowloon to conduct “Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops in different secondary schools all over Hong Kong from October 2018 to June 2019. The schools respond enthusiastically for registration. In November & December 2018, 20 sessions of “Young and Alcohol Free” Student Workshops were successfully conducted with around 3 000 students participated.

Hong Kong Cancer Day 2018

Director of Health, Dr Constance CHAN and Head, Surveillance & Epidemiology Branch , Centre for Health Protection, Dr Regina CHING visited Hong Kong Cancer Day 2018 in Tsim Sha Tsui Kowloon Park Plaza. Guests, healthcare professionals and celebrities showed their support to “Young and Alcohol Free” game booth which was devoted by the Department of Health (DH). Members from Auxiliary Medical Service (AMS) Cadet Corps and Hong Kong Red Cross Youth & Volunteer Department participated actively and helped to disseminate the message of “Alcohol-related Harms” to the pubic to get rid of “Alcohol”.

Hong Kong Red Cross School Health Ambassador Program

The Department of Health held one training session in School of Nursing, St. Teresa‘s Hospital on the topic of “ Young and Alcohol Free”. 50 nursing students and Hong Kong Red Cross Staff participated in the training would be the speakers of “ Young and Alcohol Free” Health Talk under 2018-2019 School Health Ambassadors Program.

Junior Police Call (JPC) Fight Crime Summer Camp - Young and Alcohol Free “Anti-alcohol Workshop”

The Department of Health organized the “Anti-alcohol Workshop” in the JPC Fight Crime Summer Camp this year. The messages of “Young and Alcohol Free” and “Say No to alcohol” were delivered to the JPC members, leaders, teachers and parents in the workshop.

“Alcohol-free Generation Z” Interactive Health Education Session – AMS Cadet (New Territories, Kowloon and Hong Kong Zone)

The Department of Health delegated the TWGHs “Stay Sober Stay Free” Alcohol Abuse Prevention and Treatment Service to conduct three “Alcohol-free Generation Z” Interactive Health Education Sessions to the Auxiliary Medical Service (AMS) Cadet in May & June 2018.

The Department of Health delegated the TWGHs to organise “Alcohol-free Generation Z” Interactive Health Education Session in St Teresa Secondary School on 16 May 2018.

Youth unconference on youth drinking

KELY Support Group and Support! International Foundation co-hosted the Tidal Wave Series - 1st youth unconference. Representative from DH was invited to share with participating students about the alcohol harms, to facilitate participants’ discussion on the topic of reducing youth drinking.

Health Talk on “Drink or Not Drink? Be Informed!” for Fitness and Sports Coaching Program, The Hong Kong College of Technology

Speakers from the Department of Health delivered a health talk “Drink or not Drink? Be Informed!” to the students and teaching staff of Fitness and Sports Coaching Program, the Hong Kong College of Technology on 7 March 2018. The health talk aimed to disseminate the message of no alcohol among college students, and to promote “Alcohol and Health Questionnaire”.

Drinking alcohol at childhood or adolescence may interfere with healthy brain development, and may cause damage to memory, learning, emotional and social well-being. Binge drinking can lead to misbehaviours, alcohol poisoning, and even sudden death. Don’t drink in celebrations and social gatherings. Say “No” to Alcohol!

Legislative Council passed the Bill which prohibiting the sale and supply of intoxicating liquor to minors in the course of business

The Dutiable Commodities (Amendment) Bill 2017 (“the Bill”) was introduced by the Food and Health Bureau to Legislative Council in June 2017. It aims to prohibit the sale or supply of intoxicating liquor to minors in the course of business. The Bill seeks to restrict minors' access and exposure to alcohol thereby reducing their risk of developing alcoholism, and protect health of the youths and their family. The Bill was passed in February 2018 by the Legislative Council and will be enacted in about 6 months (effective date will be announced later).

“Young and Alcohol Free Episode II- Young People Don’t Drink” Animation

The second animation “Young People Don’t Drink” has been released. Alcohol is harmful to the brain development, causing poor memory, self-control ability, alcohol abuse or dependence in adulthood, etc. Young people must not drink. Please click here to view.

The Department of Health delegated the TWGHs “Stay Sober Stay Free” Alcohol Abuse Prevention and Treatment Service to organise “Be informed and Alcohol-free” Interactive Health Education Session at the Chinese University of Hong Kong on 14 December 2017.

Alcohol Fails “Drink or not Drink? Be Informed!” New Video

Alcoholic beverage has been classified by the World Health Organization as Group one Carcinogen, which can cause over 200 disease and injury conditions. There is no safe drinking level. People should not drink alcohol for the sake of improving health. Non-drinkers are advised not to start drinking while drinkers should gradually decrease their drinking to reduce harm. Under the following circumstances, people should not drink, for example, pregnancy, children and youth, ill, on drug treatment, driving, before and after exercise, etc.

Pregnancy drinking may leads to foetal alcohol spectrum disorder

According to a meta-analysis of 24 unique studies, 1 of every 13 pregnant women who consumed alcohol during pregnancy is estimated to have had a child with foetal alcohol spectrum disorder.

The Department of Health elaborated the marketing tactics of alcohol and other goods to its health promotion partners, empowering them to remind community members to avoid falling into the trap of advertising.

Pregnancy drinking affects craniofacial development of fetuses

An Austrlian study conducted a craniofacial phenotype analysis of 415 children, which showed that any alcohol consumption has consequences on craniofacial development, such as special facies or anomalies. These consequences are associated with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. Therefore, complete abstinence from alcohol while pregnant is the safest option.

To raise young people’s awareness of alcohol harm, the Department of Health hosted the “Young and Alcohol Free” Animated GIF Design Contest. The prize presentation ceremony was successfully concluded on 3 June.
