Announcement: A Brand New RTHK's TV Series "Medical Discovery" On Air to Explore Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)
26 Jul 2011 (Tue)
Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) is going to broadcast a brand new TV series from 26 July 2011 onwards, every Tuesday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm on TVB Jade. This programme tells the stories of 8 Hongkongers regaining their health.
With urbanization and advances in medical technology, non-communicable diseases (NCD) have replaced communicable ones as the biggest threat to human health. NCDs are highlighted by 2 starkly distinct features: on one hand they may cause irreversible damage to the patient's health and the patient may need life-long treatment; on the other hand, such diseases are often caused by the patient's lifestyle choices, such as dietary habits, drinking too much, smoking, or lack of exercise - which means such diseases are actually preventable on one's own efforts.
Money can buy comfort and convenience, but not health; more ironic is that such affluent lifestyle is usually the culprit of NCDs. This 8-episode series covers the high-risk factors of NCDs, namely "3-Highs" (high blood pressure, high blood glucose and high cholesterol), boozing, overweight, smoking, diabetes, mood, degeneration, and wear and tear .
In each episode, an individual having risk factor(s) of NCD(s) will be the protagonist, with a medical team of experts from different disciplines tailor-making a "self-rescue" proposal for him/her. It is hoped that through adopting a change in lifestyle, balanced diet and adequate physical exercise, the protagonist will improve on his/her health.
One's body should be cherished by oneself - and it is never too late to start.
